Description: SUMMER ACADEMY FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
July 9 - August 3, 2012
The Summer Academy for High School Students at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts is the definitive summer program for talented and motivated high school students: a four-week, college-level art making experience in the nation's first and premier school of fine art.
SUMMER ACADEMY CURRICULUM
DrawingAt PAFA, observational drawing skills are the foundation of all artistic endeavors and essential for a strong portfolio. Working from the still life, cityscape, PAFA’s historic Cast Hall, and the life model, students will explore a variety of drawing materials and techniques.
PaintingStudents will experience the vibrant possibilities of oil painting through PAFA's time-honored methods and contemporary expertise. Students will learn techniques of color mixing and paint application, progressing from a limited palette to complex, full-color compositions of the still life, antique casts, and figure models.
SculptureStudents will investigate the fundamental and creative aspects of sculpture through modeling the human form in clay, focusing on the underlying anatomy of the human head and surface features. Instruction will include armature construction, modeling tools and techniques, and plaster casting.
PrintmakingStudents will learn a variety of printmaking techniques with their own drawings and ideas as inspiration. Hand-printing and press processing including relief printing, traditional etching, and screenprinting will be explored, as students produce limited editions of their own work.
A visit to PAFA's Museum, including the private vaults to view rarely-seen masterpieces, will supplement all studio activity.
FACILITIESSummer Academy classes share the same spacious studios used by PAFA’s Certificate, BFA and MFA students. The Samuel M.V. Hamilton Building features superb drawing and painting classrooms, state-of-the-art printmaking and sculpture shops, a rooftop painting terrace, library, spacious student lounge, and the PAFA Art Supply store. Students will also study from the cast collection and museum collections in PAFA's Historic Landmark Building. RESIDENTIAL SERVICESComprehensive residential services located on the University of Pennsylvania campus are available for additional cost through Julian Krinsky Camps and Programs.
