Description: New York University Tisch School of the Arts offers professional training in acting, dramatic writing, filmmaking, and photography. Programs are available in New York City, Dublin, and Paris. Students earn 6 college credits. Scholarships are available.
Acting offers conservatory training (28 hours each week) at three professional acting studios: the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute, the Experimental Theatre Wing (ETW), and the Collaborative Arts Project 21 (CAP21). NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts offers summer conservatory training for high school students at three renowned professional studios: 1. The Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute, famous for the “method” acting technique. Classes include television/film, speech, and movement. 2. The Experimental Theatre Wing (ETW). Classes include contact improvisation, character-based scene work, and extended vocal technique. 3. The Collaborative Arts Project 21 (CAP21). Musical theatre performance classes include acting, dance, and vocal techniques. Similar courses are available in Dublin and Paris. Film and Television The Tisch School of the Arts program in film and television combines intensive professional training with a comprehensive understanding of the techniques and theories behind the art of film and video production. Experience in film or video is not required. In the summer Filmmakers Workshop, high school students work in teams to develop their directing, shooting, and editing skills as they produce music videos and short videos (three to five minutes in length). In addition, students attend lectures, seminars, and screenings, as well as discussions with industry professionals. Students also learn the basics of screenwriting. Photography and Video The Tisch School of the Arts program in photography and imaging focuses on using photo-based image making for communication, creative expression, and personal exploration. The program is for beginning and advanced students and consists of a rigorous combination of darkroom work; cultural, technical, and historical lectures; critiques of student work; and visits to gallery exhibitions and photographers’ studios. Students receive an introduction to 35 mm manual cameras, proper black-and-white film exposure, and darkroom printing, as well as color slide film, scanning, basic Photoshop, and digital color printing. Work is exhibited at Tisch galleries and community settings.
The Tisch School of the Arts Summer High School Program in Dramatic Writing introduces students to the exciting world of dramatized storytelling. The program provides students with rigorous training in the basics of both playwriting and screenwriting. Students learn the fundamentals of dramatic structure in lecture and discussion sessions on playwriting and screenwriting, as well as develop scripts in each medium. In workshop sessions, students present their work, which is then reviewed, critiqued, and rewritten. This culminates in an outline and partial scripting of a full-length screenplay and a 10-minute play. Student monologues are directed and acted by professional directors and actors. Readings of classic plays and screenplays, as well as screenings of movies and important theatrical productions, complement the course work.
