Description: Barnard's Summer Pre-College Programs are coed programs for high school students who are intellectually prepared for college-level work and will have completed the 10th or 11th grade by June 2012. We offer four different programs: As a student in our Liberal Arts Intensive or ourSummer in the City Program, you may choose a specific area in which to concentrate or try your hand at a couple of different topics. Alternatively, broaden your dance horizons and engage New York City through Dance in the City. Last, but certainly not least, you may choose to make a difference with the Young Women’s Leadership Institute (for women only). Evenings and weekends are packed with organized trips to sights like the Statue of Liberty, Rockefeller Center and Union Square. Students can view New York City on a Liberty Harbor Cruise, eat at the famous Grimaldi's Pizzeria in Brooklyn, and see a Broadway show. You may also catch a film at Bryant Park's outdoor festivals, hang out in Central Park, or escape to Jones Beach for a day filled with surf and sun. In short, you'll get an unforgettable taste of your future while experiencing life in the big city.
Courses: Pre-College Program courses are adapted from the Barnard College undergraduate curriculum. Four-week, Summer in the City students can choose two courses from topics as varied as architecture and journalism to religious studies and studio art, while one-week Liberal Arts Intensive participants focus on a single subject: writing, literature, political science, philosophy, history, mixed-media. psychology, urban studies, music or theatre. Dance in the City students will learn about dance, fine-tune their techniques at the Alvin Ailey Extension School, and view performances throughout the city. Lastly, the Young Women's Leadership Institute at Barnard College has itself been a distinguished leader in the higher education of women since its founding in 1889, and Barnard has produced graduates who go on to extraordinary leadership roles in a wide range of fields. The Young Women’s Leadership Institute combines academic learning, skill building workshops, and student-run sessions to train young women leaders in an intensive one-week program.
Admissions: Admission is selective, and is based on strong high school records, recommendations, and a personal statement. Applications from students whose preparation may vary are welcome, especially if they reveal unusual talents and interests that can be further developed in this program. |
